Original size
Format: JPEG
Size:164 KB
Dimension: 1024×768 px
Resolution: 300×300 px/in
Already pretty small as you can tell, many pictures are in the many hundreds of KB or even in the several MB sizes

Resized
I resized the picture to a width of 910 px to fit the size of my column,
and also changed the resolution, keeping the aspect ratio, which resulted in the following parameters:
Format: JPEG
Size:116 KB
Dimension: 910×683 px
Resolution: 72×72 px/in (good enough for the web)

Mannually compressed
Now I went on and “manually” compressed the image and got the following parameters:
Format: WebP
Size:19 KB
Dimension and resolution didn’t change

Short pixel optimization of the original size.
The one below is the same original picture after optimization/compression by Shortpixel.
Look at the screenshot here, to see the image (screenshot is 3MB), to see what Shortpixel did in terms of compression and space-saving (I set the optimization to lossless, to keep the quality of the picture).
It is also important to mention that Shortpixel uses credits to compress, (you get 100 free credits/month for the free version).
In the end, it is up to the user to choose which way to go.
I just wanted to share something useful I found.
